UnoRouter vs OpenRouter: an honest comparison

UnoRouter and OpenRouter both put many models behind one OpenAI-compatible key. The difference is what sits on top: a headless API, or an API plus a built-in chat and character client. Here is the honest version.

UnoRouter and OpenRouter both put 200+ models behind one OpenAI compatible key. OpenRouter is API only and closed source. UnoRouter adds a built in chat and character client on the same key, publishes its full stack under OSI licenses, and serves most models on a genuine free tier of about 1 request per minute per model. Paid use is pay as you go and credits never expire.

OpenRouter gives you one key for every model. So does UnoRouter. The difference fits in one line: OpenRouter is just the API, UnoRouter is the API plus a built-in chat and character client on the same key. That is the whole comparison.

API, or API plus a client

OpenRouter, LiteLLM, and Portkey hand you an endpoint and stop. You build the interface yourself. UnoRouter ships both: a clean API for coding agents, and a chat and character client that share one key, one catalog, one balance.

Models and price

Both put 200+ models behind one key with no markup on tokens. OpenRouter charges a 5.5% fee when you buy credits (with an $0.80 minimum), and its free models are capped at 50 requests a day until you have bought $10 of credits. UnoRouter is pay-as-you-go, no purchase fee, credits never expire, and the free tier is open from the start. The catalogs are close, so the catalog is not what decides it.

What OpenRouter leaves out

Point Claude Code, Cline, or Codex at UnoRouter and it just works like any OpenAI endpoint. The same key also runs a full character client (personas, lorebooks, presets, SillyTavern card import) and drops into SillyTavern, Janitor.AI, or Chub. OpenRouter is API-only, so every interface is on you.

Switching is one line

Point your client at https://api.unorouter.com/v1 and keep your code. The same key works in a chat app's custom-endpoint field, so there is no second account to manage.

How to pick

Only shipping code and want the widest catalog? OpenRouter is fine. Want zero-markup self-hosted routing? Use LiteLLM. Want one key that runs your coding agent and a real chat client? That is UnoRouter.

Frequently asked questions

Is UnoRouter cheaper than OpenRouter?

Both bill per token at similar list prices. OpenRouter adds a fee when you buy credits. UnoRouter is pay as you go with no purchase fee, credits never expire, and more than 190 models have a free tier.

Can I use the same key for coding agents and roleplay chat?

Yes. One UnoRouter key works in Claude Code, Cline, and OpenCode through the OpenAI compatible API, and the same account includes a full character chat client that also drops into SillyTavern or JanitorAI.

How do I switch from OpenRouter to UnoRouter?

Point your client at https://api.unorouter.com/v1 and keep your code. The API is OpenAI compatible, model names come from GET /v1/models, and Anthropic and Gemini native endpoints are also served.
